What is obedience?
Competitive Obedience showcases all of the training you have been doing with your dog to win awards. Dogs will be given a set of challenges where they lose points for any slip ups.
Pet training classes will teach you the basics and then, if you'd like to learn more, you can take specialist classes which are a lot more advanced. Exercises range from heelwork (where your dog walks perfectly by your side), to control exercises such as timed sit and down stays (sometimes when your dog is out of sight!), and a scent challenge to track down the correct item.

Competing in Young Kennel Club competitions
Competitive obedience is perfect for smart dogs and handlers looking for a challenge. Shows take place all over the country throughout the year and are open for competitors of all levels to enter. If you win your class, within qualifying marks, at a Young Kennel Club qualifier, you will be invited to compete in the Crufts final.
How do I take part?
- Find a training club in your area to take part in training for the event
- Your dog must be registered on The Royal Kennel Club Breed register or Activity register
- Make sure you read the Young Kennel Club Obedience Rules
- Dogs can enter from 6 months old
