Book a BVA/KC/ISDS Eye scheme examination at the Game Fair on Friday 25 July – Saturday 26 July.

What's included

What the assessment will involve

The BVA/KC/ISDS Eye scheme examination is a clinical eye examination carried out by ophthalmologist Prof Peter Bedford. The ophthalmologist will first administer drops into your dog’s eyes to dilate the pupils and ensure they stay wide during the examination. Once the drops have taken effect, the vet will examine your dog’s eyes with an ophthalmoscope in a dark room. The examination will identify inherited and non-inherited eye conditions in your dog and the results of the examination will be recorded on a certificate. If you wish to find out more regarding the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye scheme please visit the eye screening scheme page.

Please be aware that the drops used will make dogs sensitive to bright light, so where possible we’d recommend you wait until after running to have the test performed. The drug used to dilate the pupils is short acting and rapidly absorbed, dilating the pupil within 15 to 30 minutes. The drug does not bind to tissue as strongly as alternatives, so the dilation is short-lived and there are few residual effects. Duration of the pupil dilation is usually only three to six hours, although occasionally the effect can last up to 12 hours.

What you will need

You must bring your dog’s Royal Kennel Club registration certificate and any previous BVA/KC/ISDS Eye scheme certificates with you to the appointment.
