The Braque du Bourbonnais will become recognised by the Royal Kennel Club with effect from 1 October 2026. The breed will be classified in the Gundog Group on the Imported Breed Register. Until such time as a Royal Kennel Club interim breed standard has been published, the Braque du Bourbonnais is not eligible to compete at Royal Kennel Club licensed breed shows.
Originating from the Bourbonnais region of France, the Braque du Bourbonnais is an ancient pointing breed dating back to the 16th century. Once highly regarded as a hunting companion, the breed declined after the First World War but was successfully revived in the late 20th century. Today it is recognised for its versatility as a gundog and its friendly, adaptable nature, with growing popularity both in France and internationally.
The Royal Kennel Club will recognise 230 breeds of pedigree dog from 1 October 2026, following the simultaneous recognition of the Epagneul Français and Silken Windhound and the recognition of the Yakutian Laika and Miniature American Shepherd in July 2026.
