The Epagneul Français will become recognised by the Royal Kennel Club with effect from 1 October 2026. The breed will be classified in the Gundog Group on the Imported Breed Register. Until such time as a Royal Kennel Club interim breed standard has been published, the Epagneul Français is not eligible to compete at Royal Kennel Club licensed breed shows.
The Epagneul Français is an ancient gundog breed originating in France, with records dating back to the 14th century. Traditionally valued for its intelligence, versatility and gentle temperament, the breed was widely used for hunting and retrieving game across varied terrain. Following a period of decline in the early 20th century, the Epagneul Français was successfully revived and is now recognised internationally, with growing popularity as both a working gundog and companion.
The Royal Kennel Club will recognise 230 breeds of pedigree dog from 1 October 2026, following the simultaneous recognition of the Braque du Bourbonnais and Silken Windhound and the recognition of the Yakutian Laika and Miniature American Shepherd in July 2026.
