MPs and their four-legged companions will compete for the coveted title of Westminster Dog of the Year 2026, with the winner selected by an expert judging panel.
Alongside the judges’ decision, members of the public have the opportunity to support their favourite parliamentary pooch through the Westminster Dog of the Year public vote.
The competition and judging criteria
This year, Westminster Dog of the Year celebrates ‘A Good Life Together & A Lifetime Commitment’, highlighting the joy that dogs bring us, and that a good life together is a lifetime commitment we all aspire to as responsible owners. The event will draw attention to topics such as responsible dog ownership, breeding, training, and socialisation, which can help ensure that all dogs are happy and healthy for a lifetime.
Entrants will be scored out of 10 on their handling of and bond with their dog before being asked three questions, reflecting this year’s theme of ‘A Good Life Together & A Lifetime Commitment’, their dog’s story and their commitment to improving dog welfare through their work in Parliament.
Contenders will be asked:
What does ‘a good life and lifetime commitment’ look like for you and your dog?
Why should (your dog) / (Dogs Trust rescue dog) be crowned Westminster Dog of the Year?
What policy areas are you intending to support or raise during this Parliamentary session, and why?
While waiting to enter the judging ring, MPs and their dogs can put their skills to the test on our fun and friendly ‘Pawsault’ Course, featuring a tunnel, weaving poles and hurdles suitable for dogs of all sizes. Dogs can also follow our scent trail, offering another fun opportunity for enrichment ahead of their moment in the spotlight.
